While April 1st is also known as “April Fool’s Day”, you won’t be a fool for exercising your right to vote at the polls. Especially as a Wisconsin voter, the collective results will be important to pundits figuring out what it all means on a national level where ideologues try to exert their influence on the American mindset. But for Badger voters, it’s important on a much more fundamental level where votes for mayors, school boards and referendum have direct effects on the voters themselves.
The nation’s focus is on the race for Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice being fought between Dane County Judge Susan Crawford favored by Democrats, and Waukesha County Judge Brad Schimel and his Republican supporters. Having passed the $90 million mark on Monday, it’s the most expensive state supreme court race in American History according to the Brennan Center for Justice. Currently, the Wisconsin Supreme Court has a 4-3 liberal majority with one liberal justice set to retire, putting the balance entirely up to the voters today. The other statewide contests are for the Superintendent of Public Instruction being fought between conservative Brittany Kinser and liberal Incumbent Jill Underly, and for a referendum which, if approved, will require a photo ID in order to vote in any election in Wisconsin.
Locally, eyes are on the contest between Incumbent Sheboygan Mayor Ryan Sorenson and challenger, Alder John Belanger, while there’s one in-city seat and two out-of-the-city seats on the Sheboygan Area School District Board up for grabs.
Most Sheboygan County jurisdictions also have alders, supervisors and school board members on their ballots. The polls will be open until 8 p.m.
