Washington County Sheriff
A Washington County Sheriff’s Deputy appears to have landed on the wrong side of the law. Sheriff Martin Schulteis said that it was “with profound disappointment and a deep sense of anger” that he had to tell citizens of Washington County that one of his patrol deputies was accused of retail theft while on duty. Schulteis called the actions “wholly unacceptable and a direct violation of the core values that this agency stands for.”
On February 27th the Sheriff learned of accusations that a 10-year veteran deputy had made multiple thefts of food items from a gas station in Richfield. The Waukesha County Sheriff’s Office was immediately asked to conduct a thorough, transparent, and impartial criminal investigation. The report alleges a pattern of thefts that, although not of large monetary value, still constitutes a “profound betrayal of trust”. The report has been turned over to the Washington County District Attorney’s Office, along with a request for a special prosecutor in order to avoid any conflict of interest.
