Problems with the nation’s bridges have been in the news lately, especially after 68 bridges were identified by the National Transportation Safety Board for risk assessment. While Sheboygan’s 8th Street Bridge wasn’t among those, the State of Wisconsin doesn’t let inspections lapse, with a thorough going-over every two years required by the Wisconsin DOT, and this year, that is due in Sheboygan.
The City of Sheboygan has employed the firm Hardesty & Hanover LLC to do the job and is preparing to sign the contract, but some adjustment in language was requested by the inspector related to indemnification against risk. That requires Common Council approval, which should be a non-issue since the Public Works Committee has already recommended its passage.
The Council meets on Wednesday since the regular meeting schedule was bumped for Election Day. Assuming no issues, then the bridge inspection will take place next month in advance of the busy summer season.
