The Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development is out with its January 2025 assessment of employment and unemployment statistics as supplied by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. In brief, the report says that preliminary January unemployment rates in Wisconsin’s Metropolitan Statistical Areas increased by between four-tenths and 1.1 percentage points in all 13 rated areas both month-over month, and year-over year. 34 of Wisconsin’s largest 35 cities saw unemployment rates increase month over month with Mequon the only outlier having unchanged rates, while all 35 experienced increases compared to January last year. Menominee County was the only of the state’s 72 that had unchanged unemployment figures when compared to both month-over-month and year-over year; all others saw increases in both metrics.

The Sheboygan Metro Area had a January workforce of 62,800, a loss of 600 from December, but a gain of 900 year-over-year. Once adjusted for seasonal variation, the loss since December drops to only 200, while the yearly increase drops to 500.
As for unemployment, the Sheboygan Metro Area’s January rate was 2.8%, up a half percent from December, and six-tenths more than January last year.
As a City, Sheboygan saw a 2.9% unemployment rate in January, mirroring the Metro Area trends, and it shares its 12th Lowest ranking with three other of Wisconsin’s 35 largest cities. Fitchburg had the lowest rate of 2.1%, while Racine’s 5.2% unemployment rate placed dead last.
Sheboygan County held onto its number-4 ranking among Wisconsin’s 72 Counties for a second month, with a 2.8% unemployment rate…a half percent higher than in December, and up six-tenths over the year. Dane County had the lowest rate in the state at 2.5%.
