The Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Department AND Sheboygan Police say scammers are back at it again – this time spoofing one of either the Sheriff’s or Police Department’s real phone numbers and pretending to be them.
This is the same one that’s been propagating throughout Wisconsin counties where they tell you that there’s a warrant or overdue fine, and you need to pay them off with gift cards in order to avoid arrest. To those getting called, it may appear legitimate, as technology is being used to not only impersonate the real department, but the method also makes tracing the calls – and retrieving lost money – nearly impossible.
Just as a reminder, neither the Police or Sheriff’s Department will call you for these circumstances, and officials say that it’s best to simply hang up on the scammer.
