The Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Office is reporting another scam hitting the area, and they have the proof.
That proof is in the form of a voicemail left by a scammer attempting to get a person to call them back. The scammer identifies himself as being a member of the Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Office and requests that the recipient call him back at a 262-area code number, matching at least that part of the real number. But that call-back would result in an attempt to get the victim to send crypto currency or gift cards in order to avoid an arrest.
Such scams are getting better at imitating the “real thing” when it comes to law enforcement. The Sheriff, however, pointed out again that people will never receive a phone call for such purposes, and they don’t accept payments in cards and crypto. People should hang up and not call back. And if there’s concern over a legitimate issue, the Sheriff’s Office can be reached through the actual non-emergency number, which is 262-284-7172.
