Motorists navigating a construction zone in the Village of Cedar Grove are expressing frustration with inconsistent policies governing the flow of traffic.
WeEnergies is maintaining facilities that required the closure to through traffic of the major intersection of Union Avenue and Main Street in town, which is part of Highway 32. The Wisconsin DOT is tasked with detouring Highway 32 commercial traffic involving heavy weights onto routes that can handle the loads, which currently steers traffic around the Village on I-43 via Oostburg and Belgium. And while announcements of the work by the DOT said that the zone would remain open to local traffic only, local traffic soon discovered that things arenโt entirely clear-cut.
Growing numbers posted on social media relating the issuance of tickets between $215 and $250 plus three points to those assuming they could still get through in the absence of active work. The Village of Cedar Grove did make the word official on Thursday afternoon, stating that โThe intersection is closed off. Per the Sheboygan County Sheriff you may receive a ticket in this area. Please avoid this area. Gas stations are still open.โ
The closure is forcing those attending the Cedar Grove-Belgium schools and residents of the Village to re-think routes, as there are very limited options to get around the work, especially since closing that intersection largely cuts off school access from most of the Village, which exists to the south, unless using narrow residential streets.
