A week ago, the Sheboygan Police Department went on record as having nothing to do with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or I.C.E. However, for almost the past five years the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office has had a signed agreement working with the federal agency that manages immigration cases.
Sheriff Matt Spence told WHBL News via email that the agreement under the 287(g) Program allows a few select authorized and trained Sheriff’s employees to serve and execute administrative warrants on individuals in our jail. Sheboygan County is one of 137 total jurisdictions nationwide implementing the program. Manitowoc and Fond du Lac Counties have also signed agreements with I.C.E.
Sheriff Spence views their participation as an “efficiency of government application”, in which Sheriff staff serve administrative warrants on individuals when I.C.E. issues them. Once the inmate concerned completes their time in the County Detention Center, they are released to the agent which takes custody on behalf of I.C.E.
The Sheriff added that his department does not, has not, and will not proactively seek out members of the community and effect an arrest on an administrative warrant.
