The Sheboygan County Transportation Department has been honored as the recipient of the 2024 James B. Sorenson Award for Excellence in Pavement Preservation. The award is named for the Senior Construction and System Preservation Engineer for the Federal Highway Administration, who was widely recognized for his passion for pavement preservation. Previous winners going back to 2005 have included the cities of Los Angeles and Nashville, as well as numerous county and state-level agencies across the US. Sorenson passed away in 2009.
Sheboygan County becomes the 15th recipient of the national award in recognition of its Sheboygan County Operational Pavement Preservation Evaluation begun in 2021, which provides a live traffic test to assess preservation technologies. The County also participates in national initiatives like the National Road Research Alliance, focusing on safety features such as centerline rumble strips. Innovative treatments, including void-reducing asphalt membranes and penetrating asphalt emulsions are also used by the County to extend maintenance intervals and enhance sustainability.
Sheboygan County was nominated by Henry G. Meigs, LLC and Asphalt Materials, Inc., which stated in its nomination that โSheboygan County has consistently taken a proactive approach to emerging trends in preservation and demonstrates a willingness to evolve as new technologies and opportunities arise.โ
