By the reactions one might think separate speeches were given, but that’s party politics as illustrated by two local leaders.
Governor Evers gave his State-of-the-State Address in Madison on Wednesday evening, touting tax cuts already made, and declaring 2025 the “Year of the Kid”.
Senate Majority Leader, Republican Devin LeMahieu of Oostburg reacted by saying that “Governor Evers spent this evening touting the legislature’s tax cuts while he remains the only roadblock to meaningful tax reform in Wisconsin.” He continued, “The Governor hiked taxes on food stamp recipients so he could spend their money on a wishlist of liberal policy initiatives.”, and declared that “Senate Republicans will reject it this session.”
Freshman Democrat Representative Joe Sheehan of Sheboygan gave the Governor’s address a much warmer reception, saying that “Governor Tony Evers’ strong leadership over the last 6 years has been an undeniably positive force in the State of Wisconsin.” Sheehan said he was pleased with Evers’ “Year of the Kid” declaration, adding that he was excited to see the real difference easing the burden of childcare can make on the lives of Wisconsinites.”
While the Governor lays out his vision for the coming year with the speech, many of his proposals likely will never see the light of day once majority Republicans have their say.
