A project to expand the dental clinic at Lakeshore College is on track for an anticipated completion on June 1st. The clinic, which began construction one month ago today, should achieve fully operational status for training as well as hosting the college’s Community Dental Clinic by June 30th.
Lakeshore College President Dr. Paul Carlsen expressed gratitude to the Lakeshore Community Health Care partnership that allows students to gain essential hands-on experience. Expansion of the clinic along with the launch of a dental hygiene program, he said, are crucial steps to meeting the growing needs of the community.
Lakeshore Community Health Care CEO Kristin Stearns added that the collaboration with Lakeshore College recognizes the challenge of filling the current shortage of dental hygienists in Wisconsin by adding an associate degree in that field.
Lakeshore secured more than $1.2 million in new funding in May of ‘24. That will support the expansion as well as the development of an accredited dental hygiene program. President Carlsen said the accreditation process takes about 18 months, placing the anticipated program launch in the fall of 2026.
