Ozaukee County is the latest among numerous in Wisconsin to report a wave of telephone scams seeking to bilk people out of money. The ploy is a, by now, familiar one in which the caller claims to be a law enforcement officer whose job it is to advise the victim that they’ve missed Jury Duty, and that citations have been issued as a result. The scam caller proceeds to instruct the victim how to pay the citations over the phone, and thus be spared the embarrassment of being arrested.
The Ozaukee County Sheriff emphasizes that her office does not discuss or take payments for citations or warrants over the phone. Anyone receiving such a call is advised to ignore the caller’s instructions and to hang up right away.
If you’d like to confirm the legitimacy of a call, the Ozaukee County Sheriff encourages citizens to contact them through the non-emergency number at 262-284-7172. Other counties have reiterated the option of verifying calls with their respective Sheriff’s offices.
