Those in the final planning stages of their New Year’s Eve celebration are being reminded to include an important item that demands attention – how to get home safely. The thought is at the core of the national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” enforcement campaign against impaired driving that’s been underway since December 15th.
The emphasis is on planning for that sober ride home, whether that’s via a designated driver, or hiring a ride home…but the bottom line is that if you’re impaired, you don’t belong behind the wheel, and if you choose poorly, you could wind up poor as a result. OWI convictions can cost around $10,000 including fines, court costs, lost time at work, higher insurance rates and vehicle services. A convicted driver can also lose their license and vehicle as a result.
The Wisconsin State Patrol reminds the public to:
- Always drive sober.
- Identify a sober designated driver. If you’re feeling the effects of alcohol or another substance, you’re likely over the 0.08 BAC limit and should not drive.
- Take the bus, call a taxi, or use a rideshare service instead of getting behind the wheel. Use the Tavern League’s Safe Ride program to find a ride home.
- If you have a friend who is about to drink and drive, step in. Take the keys away and help them get home safely.
- If you suspect a driver is impaired, safely gather as much info as you can about the vehicle, driver, and location. Then call 911.
“Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” runs through January 1st, and will feature an enhanced presence of law enforcement officers on the roads.
