The person suspected of entering multiple vehicles in Calumet County was taken into custody on Monday by Calumet County Sheriff’s deputies. The arrest follows reports of early and mid-November vehicle entries and thefts from those vehicles kept at residences on the north shore of Lake Winnebago in the Village of Harrison.
On Monday, Calumet County Sheriff’s Office investigators surveilled a City of Menasha resident where they believed they would find the suspect. They did observe that person leaving the residence, and deputies followed them to a local gas station where the male suspect was arrested without incidence. A search of his residence turned up stolen property.
Tristan Backus of Menasha is now in the Calumet County Correctional Facility, being held on nine counts of theft-moveable property, burglary, and two counts of theft of firearms.
The Calumet County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Menasha Police Department in the operation. Authorities are reminding people to remove valuables from vehicles as a matter of common practice, and to lock vehicles when unattended, as most of the thefts were to unlocked vehicles. Gun owners were also offered gun locks for no charge from any Calumet County law enforcement agency, as well as from the Harrison, Sherwood, and Hilbert Village Halls.
