Even as the November election is only a month in the rear-view-mirror, the upcoming spring election is beginning to come into view. For the City of Sheboygan, the Mayoral race is taking shape with two candidates already filing to run. Incumbent Mayor Ryan Sorenson filed his papers shortly after being allowed to on December 1st. A challenger has now entered as Alderperson John Belanger announced his intent to run on Sunday.
Belanger noted his focus on addressing homelessness, housing shortages, transparency, city planning and economic development in his message, which framed his vision as “Development by Design—Not by Default”, which aims to create sustainable progress while honoring Sheboygan’s heritage.
Sorenson was elected to his post as Sheboygan’s youngest-ever Mayor at age 27 in 2021 with his defeat of incumbent Mike Vandersteen. Belanger previously served as an alder from 2012-2018 and is now Alderman of District-2.
Sorenson’s re-election campaign message notes his history of “massive road repairs and historic investments in affordable housing.” However his tenure has also been fraught with controversial appointments, resignations, and alleged lack of transparency. Belanger said that he is committed to restoring trust, providing clarity, and building a brighter future for the city.
Candidates face a January 7th deadline to file papers to run, and should more candidates enter the race, a primary election would be held on February 18 with the top two candidates advancing. If only Sorenson and Belanger run, they will face off on Tuesday, April 1st.
