A portion of a $2.98 million allocation to the Great Lakes Region from the National Coastal Resilience Fund will be coming to Sheboygan in order to help design and plan projects that combat coastal flooding, erosion, and environmental degradation. The award was announced on Monday by the City of Sheboygan, which joins seven others across the Great Lakes Region, and is intended to enhance waterfront access, restore fish and wildlife habitats, improve water quality and build stronger defenses against climate change-related threats.
Mayor Ryan Sorenson said the funds will help the City move forward with coastal erosion control plans that help address the effects of high waves and changing Lake Michigan water levels. Sorenson said the projects will help to “…ensure safer, healthier waterfronts and better environmental stewardship for generations to come.”
