More details, including the names of those involved in a Sunday morning crash that took the lives of two persons in Manitowoc County, have been released by the Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff Dan Hartwig says his staff received a call at 1:48 a.m. on Sunday, and along with Manitowoc County EMS and Fire personnel, responded to a crash on I-43 north of County Road “JJ” within the Township of Manitowoc Rapids.
Preliminary investigation found that a 2015 Jeep Cherokee Sport operated by 76-year-old Michael Johnson of Chilton had entered the southbound lanes of I-43 heading northbound, leading to a wrong-way, head-on collision with a southbound 2018 Volkswagen Golf operated by 43-year-old Jacob Ruiz of Sheboygan. There were no others involved, and both operators were declared deceased at the scene.
A third motorist traveling southbound through the scene collided with vehicle debris from the initial crash, but neither the operator nor passengers were injured.
The Wisconsin State Patrol is completing a reconstruction of the crash, and no further details were released for the time being.
