A recent “Direct-Referral” requesting funds to address a need in the City’s sanitary sewer system drew an inquiry from yours truly, and an informative response from the Superintendent of Sheboygan’s Wastewater Treatment Facility, Jordan Skiff.
The question arose when a Direct Referral request for funds was submitted to City Hall. That’s a way of fast-tracking requests for immediate needs; in this case, the replacement of a long-used pump at a sanitary sewer lift station. $125,000 was being budgeted for the item initially, and an errant, duplicate entry into the City’s document records raised my questions on funding. A correction ensued, and the regular order of taking-care-of-(unpopular)-
City of Sheboygan Wastewater Superintendent Jordan Skiff explained that the pumps at the small lift station at 6th and Pershing Avenue on Sheboygan’s far northeast side were functioning well considering that they are nearing the end of their expected life. However, the risk of failure remains, threatening backups into the basements of those served by that portion of the system should a failure occur. And so it was proposed that the Common Council make funds available to do what’s needed to alleviate that risk.
As it turns out, the actual quote up for approval is closer to $68,000, and Skiff says that after meeting with three qualified companies over the past year, he’s confident that the City is getting a good value for the price…even considering supporting electrical and communications work.
The proposed funding heads for likely approval on Monday night.
