A new way of how the City of Sheboygan and its residents handle inclement winter weather will be launched this coming Sunday. The adjustments to the Winter Parking andSnow emergency Ordinances were approved recently by the Common Council, and will be in effect until March 31, 2025. That’s an earlier termination to previous rules that held the restrictions in place until April 30th – and other changes bear notice.
Beginning on December first, the City is encouraging residents to “STAY, WAIT, RELOCATE, REPEAT”
• STAY: Park on the correct side of the street for winter parking.
• WAIT: Wait for the plows to clear the opposite side of the street.
• RELOCATE: Move your vehicle to the plowed side before midnight.
• REPEAT: Keep your car parked on the plowed side for the following day. As for the “Park for Tomorrow” rule of the past, there is still a way to apply that. As the new restrictions involve only the hours of 12 Midnight until 6 a.m. on the average, storm-free winter day, those who need to park on the street will still park for tomorrow’s hours of Midnight until 6 a.m. That means parking on the even numbered side of City blocks on Sunday night, preceding the 12 Midnight – 6 a.m. hours on Monday. That pattern will continue on non-stormy days through the end of March, and residents who have off-street parking available are being encouraged to make the most use of that. Then, many things change for a snow emergency.
A “Snow Emergency” is no longer restricted to a heavy snow event, but can now involve any winter weather that needs attention of the DPW for maintaining safe travel through the city, and not just heavy snow storms or blizzards. During Snow Emergencies, vehicles on non-snow emergency routes will need to park on one-side-only, with the present calendar date – even or odd – dictating the side to park upon. After the snow is cleared to the curb on non-snow emergency routes, usually the product of two or three passes, residents are encouraged to move to the cleared side of the street before midnight that day. The usual prohibitions against all parking on snow emergency routes, boulevards, cul-de-sacs and dead end roads remain valid. A snow emergency remains in effect until officially cancelled by the Mayor or City Council. Those who violate the rules will be subject to a $50 fine, and if it impedes snow removal, a vehicle could be towed.
Under the new procedures, it’s intended that snow emergencies will be anticipated in advance, rather than declared after-the-fact of a storm, and it is expected that this will enable Department of Public Works crews to more efficiently get Sheboygan motorists back on the streets and into the normal routine.
