Many reports are being received throughout the area of loud aircraft filling the evening skies. Reports are especially common over northern Sheboygan, along with Calumet and Manitowoc Counties, prompting questions about what’s going on. The answer is flight training exercises conducted by the 115th Fighter Wing out of Truax Field near Madison. That facility hosts the new F-35 Lightning II aircraft, only the second Air National Guard unit with the advanced fighter.
In order to ensure readiness to operate under all conditions, the usual daytime flights have been shifted to nighttime exercises this week Monday through Thursday, with flight paths between Truax and a closed airspace over Lake Michigan taking those planes on a rumbling course over our counties in east-central Wisconsin.
The 115th says that the flight paths have been designed to minimize noise to area residents, and flights are scheduled to wind up by around 9:15 p.m. daily.
