There may be no more “park for tomorrow” in practice during Sheboygan snow emergencies after the Public Works Committee took up proposed changes to the ordinance on Tuesday.
The first change involves redefining the winter season as the period from December 1st until March 31st of the following year, shortening the period by one month in the spring. Another is to change the trigger from a heavy snowstorm or blizzard specifically, to that of any winter weather condition that justifies the emergency order.
Once a snow emergency is declared, the even-odd parking rules would take effect with one crucial change: instead of parking for tomorrow as under the current rules, parking would be determined by the day the order is issued, so that an emergency declared on an even-numbered day immediately restricts parking on affected streets to the even-numbered side instead of the following day’s odd-number. Snow emergencies that last more than 48 hours would keep the even/odd declaration day order, but also allow moving to whichever side that has been cleared to the curb.
Those changes go before the full Common Council for consideration on Monday evening.
