If you get a call from the law in Manitowoc County, it’s almost certain to be a scammer. The Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office has been receiving an influx of calls from individuals who’ve fallen victim to a Law Enforcement Imposter Scam in which the callers claim to be Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Deputies and other local law enforcement officers. One victim who reported being contacted by a non-existent Sergeant Johnson of the Sheriff’s Office, was told that without coughing up some money a warrant would be issued for his arrest. Another victim was scammed using a well-known scheme where a grandparent is asked to provide money to keep a grandchild out of jail.
The Sheriff reiterated that no law enforcement agency contacts citizens requesting money via either phone or social media, they won’t ask for personal information, and no legitimate collection involves gift cards or crypto currency like bitcoin. He asked that anyone who’s been victimized or already provided personal information to contact both your financial institutions and local law enforcement immediately, and warned that victims are often contacted a second time for more money.
