Anyone whose utilities are disconnected because of failure to pay bills is being advised to make arrangements for payment or financial assistance now. That’s because despite a winter DISconnection moratorium that begins November 1st, utilities aren’t required to REconnect any already-disconnected service, potentially leaving those customers out-in-the-cold until arrangements are made.
Every year, Wisconsin utilities are prohibited by law from disconnecting utility service between November 1st and April 15th for nonpayment of bills when home heating is involved. For those already disconnected, acting before cold weather hits will allow an uninterrupted supply of home heating energy, and financial assistance is available to eligible households through the Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Program. That’s part of the larger Home Energy Plus program that also helps with emergency furnace repairs, conservation service and weatherization.
