People living in a majority of Wisconsin Counties are being asked by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to avoid outdoor burning. That’s because of high fire danger resulting from gusty winds and dry vegetation. The DNR has suspended permits for debris piles, burn barrels and prescribed burns in 25 counties where it has permit authority. While permits aren’t involved in Sheboygan County, conditions are very dry and the fire danger is considered High. A fire danger of HIGH means wildfires ignite easily, spread rapidly and can be challenging to control.
So far during October, rainfall at the Sheboygan County Airport has totaled just over a half-inch (0.52”), and that follows a September that saw only 84-hundredths of an inch, only 31 percent of normal. Because of those dry conditions, the DNR says people should avoid outdoor burning until conditions improve; be cautious using outdoor equipment that can generate sparks; secure trailer chains to keep them from dragging, and delay having campfires until the evening when conditions usually become more favorable. And if you spot a wildfire, call 911 right away.
