A hurricane relief effort joined by the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office has resulted in a truckload of supplies headed for hard-hit Asheville, North Carolina.
The suggestion from Sheriff’s staff to join an effort between the organization “Police Lights of Christmas” and Karl’s Transportation of Green Bay was approved and launched on Tuesday evening. On Wednesday the Sheriff posted the collection idea to Facebook and by Thursday morning the word got out – and grew – quickly, and it soon became apparent that not just a U-haul, but a semi would be needed.
Sargento stepped up making a semi truck, trailer and driver available. Professional Supply donated their receiving area for loading the initial collection along with their own half-semi of 16 skids loaded with $60,000 worth of critical items. Rockline Industries contributed 2 pallets of disinfectant wipes – that’s more than 1,800 containers. Old Wisconsin donated 3 pallets, totaling nearly 3,000 pounds of product. Wal-Mart north donated water, and employees of the Sheriff’s Office, the County Human Resources, Maintenance and Highway Departments, and Kohler Company, along with area church and scouting groups, contributed to what became a full semi.
Sheriff Matt Spence said the results made him “incredibly proud to live in and serve Sheboygan County, knowing at the end of the day, our community members will rise to the challenge and stand with us in helping our fellow citizens.”
