It’s now official; Captain Matt Spence is now Sheboygan County Sheriff by appointment of Governor Tony Evers. The Governor made his intentions official in an announcement released Tuesday afternoon, filling the void created when past Sheriff Cory Roeseler retired on June 3rd.
In his announcement, the Governor said that “With more than two decades of service in the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office, Matthew Spence is an experienced law enforcement officer who is committed to his community. I am confident he will serve the people of Sheboygan County well as their next sheriff.”
Spence has spent his entire law enforcement career with the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office, joining the force in November of 2002. Rising through the ranks to Captain, Spence most recently headed the division of patrol and criminal investigations, overseeing the annual department budget, coordinating training and supervising all sworn officers. Additionally, continuing education culminated in his graduation from the FBI National Academy in 2022.
Upon his appointment as Sheriff, Spence said that “I am honored to have the opportunity to serve with the men and women of the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office. I look forward to overcoming the challenges ahead as we strive to provide quality services to the citizens of Sheboygan County.”
