Governor Evers has ordered the Wisconsin and US Flags to be flown at half-staff today in honor of Hmong-Lao Veterans Day. The observance recognizes the thousands of Hmong-Lao people who fought alongside the United States and, following the end of the Vietnam war, faced harsh retribution from the Vietnamese and Lao governments for their service. Numerous families were forced from their homes, many coming to Wisconsin which now hosts the third-largest Hmong population in the United States.
Governor Evers has proclaimed May 14 as Hmong-Lao Veterans Day in Wisconsin each year since assuming office in 2019.
