The newly-realigned 26th Assembly District is now a contest, with two Sheboygan residents running for the seat. Former Sheboygan Area School District Superintendent and former Executive Director of the Sheboygan County Economic Development Corporation Joe Sheehan announced on Wednesday that he’s running as a Democrat to represent the District which now includes the entire City of Sheboygan, the Town of Wilson and the Town of Sheboygan.
In his announcement, Sheehan said he was running because, as he put it, “…we need leaders who will listen and respond to their constituents. Women must have access to a full range of health care. Public education budgets have been underfunded for more than a decade, and that must change now.” Sheehan also said that his experience with the SCEDC gives him the knowledge needed to address issues facing area businesses, and said it was time that legislators start to work together again to solve problems.
Sheehan’s entry comes one week after current 27th District Republican Representative Amy Binsfeld announced her intention to move into the new 26th District in order to run in November. So far no other candidates have announced a run that would set up a September primary in either race.
(Editors note: the original story identified Sheehan as the current exec. director of the SCEDC – He is the past director. The story has been corrected.)
