More details were released concerning an accident in which a young woman, thrown from the vehicle she was driving, was then struck and dragged by a second vehicle before being located about three miles away.
The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office said the initial rollover crash happened just after 1 a.m. on Sunday when a vehicle southbound on Highway 45 entered the west ditch, striking a culvert. Four of the five occupants of the vehicle were ejected during the several rollovers that resulted, including the 19-year-old woman driver who lived in Hartford. She was then struck by a second vehicle, which dragged her three miles before she was found deceased near the south limits of Kewaskum by Washington County authorities. Investigation now shows that the second driver who struck her was known to occupants of the first vehicle, and the two parties may have been traveling together.
The injured included a 17-year-old Iron Ridge male who was taken to Froedtert Hospital, Milwaukee with critical injuries; a 16-year-old female passenger from Theresa, taken to Children’s Hospital, Milwaukee with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries; a 17-year-old passenger from Milwaukee, taken to Froedtert in West Bend with minor injuries; and a 21-year-old passenger from Iron Ridge who was taken to Aurora Medical Center-Washington County with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
The 19-year-old West Bend man driving the second vehicle fled the scene before emergency personnel arrived, dragging the victim in the process. He was located and arrested on suspicion of Hit and Run-Causing Death, failing to report the accident and with failure to offer assistance. He remains in the Fond du Lac County Jail awaiting arraignment, and the accident remains under investigation.
