As highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) continues to threaten wild and domestic birds, the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) is continuing to remind poultry owners to practice strong biosecurity and report signs of illness among their flocks.
This year, HPAI has been found in domestic poultry in three Wisconsin counties, most recently in Barron County.
DATCP has launched a new map indicating whether producers are located in an active control area or surveillance zone.
Signs of HPAI in infected birds include:
• Sudden death without clinical signs
• Lack of energy or appetite
• Decrease in egg production; soft, misshapen eggs
• Purple discoloration of wattles, comb, and legs
• Difficulty breathing
• Runny nose, coughing, sneezing
• Stumbling or falling down
• Diarrhea
