MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WRN) — Emotions were high at the Capitol on Wednesday during lengthy public hearings on bills to exclude transgender youth from participating in high school and college sports.
Sam Grover with the Freedom From Religion Foundation told the Assembly Committee on Education that the bills needlessly target trans students.
“There’s scientific literature that shows that it’s extremely beneficial for trans students to be able to self identify,” said Grover.
Christian sports coach, Steve McConkey, disagreed.
“I would say I’m morally opposed, but I don’t hate people. And so what I’m telling you today, it’s just wise to stop transgender athletes, and just stop it,” said McConkey.
Republican lawmakers want trans students in separate “co-ed” leagues and away from boys or girls high school sports.
