WASHINGTON, DC – Following his vote on the Agriculture, Rural Development, and FDA Appropriations Act last night, Rep. Derrick Van Orden (WI-3) released the following statement:
“Over the past two months, I have voted in support of four single-subject appropriations bills that cut spending while prioritizing the interests of Wisconsinites. Last night, I voted against the Agriculture Appropriations Act out of concern for the steep cuts that would unduly stress America’s agriculture industry.
“While my funding requests to support public safety in rural communities and Wisconsin’s signature dairy and cranberry industries were a step in the right direction, the bill went too far in cutting important programs for Wisconsin farmers. We can deliver a product that implements fiscally responsible changes while doing what is right for our farmers – and this bill was not it.
“My colleagues from the Midwest stood together to ensure that the Fiscal Responsibility Act protected our corn growers, and we will continue to fight for those who work day in and day out to feed America. I remain vehemently opposed to a shutdown and support measures like the Pay Our Troops Act to ensure our military servicemembers receive a paycheck. I look forward to working together to deliver a product that adequately serves both our agriculture industry and families in need.”
