MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WRN) — Republicans in the legislature want to prevent doctors from offering gender affirming care to transgender youth.
That bill was introduced Wednesday by Assembly Speaker Robin Vos and State Senator Duey Stroebel. It would stop the use of surgery or hormonal care for people under the age of 18 who are seeking to transition.
The authors claim doctors are pressuring parents into unnecessary and harmful treatments.
Members of the legislature’s LGBTQ caucus say the bill shows “abject cruelty” and that lawmakers have no place preventing approved medical treatment between a patient and a doctor.
The Wisconsin Medical Society opposes the measure.
