MADISON, WI (WTAQ) — Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin (PPWI) will resume abortion care services on Monday, September 18 at the Water Street Health Center in Milwaukee, and the Madison East Health Center.
Schedules will be open Thursday for patients to book appointments beginning Monday, September 18 at the Milwaukee Water Street and Madison East Health Centers.
Prior to Roe v. Wade being overturned, Planned Parenthood in Sheboygan offered medication abortion. Healthcare officials are still working to resume those services.
PPWI made the decision to suspend abortion in June 2022 after the United States overturned Roe v. Wade. Although PPWI has maintained that Wis. Stat. 940.04 – commonly referred to as the 1849 criminal abortion ban – was not enforceable, the decision was made to suspend abortion services in the wake of the Dobbs decision due to the threat of prosecution under Wisconsin Statute 940.04 posed to physicians and staff.
Since this decision, PPWI, attorneys, physicians, partners, and stakeholders have been working on a path forward to resume abortion services in Wisconsin.
“Throughout that time, we said there were two paths forward; a legislative path or a legal path,” said Tanya Atkinson, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin. “The legislative path wasn’t there at the moment, but now we have a legal path to resume providing abortion care in Wisconsin as a result of Dane County Court making it clear that the 1849 statute is not applicable to voluntary abortions.”
Planned Parenthood provides transportation services and other resources for Wisconsin residents who need to travel to complete their appointments.
