MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WRN) — Just two beers a week? That possible change in federal health guidelines will only be a recommendation.
Dr. Elizabeth Salisbury-Afshar with the UW School of Medicine and Public Health says there’s science behind it.
“The simplest way to frame it is more alcohol, more risk for health problems,” said Salisbury-Afshar. “I do anticipate moving forward that we’ll see these recommendations continue to change over time as we continue to understand more about the health consequences of alcohol use.”
She said the more alcohol someone consumes, the greater their risk is for heart disease and stroke. Alcohol consumption is also associated with high blood pressure and hypertension.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s dietary guidelines are under review and will be updated in 2025.
