(WTAQ-WLUK) – As temperatures rise throughout Wisconsin this week, so does the risk of pavement buckling.
Extreme heat has been forecast across the state, which the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) warns could create conditions for pavement buckling.
Hot temperatures can force pavement slabs to expand and push against one another, and if the pressure becomes great enough, the pavement may buckle and create unexpected bumps or dips in the road.
WisDOT says that while it is difficult to predict if or where pavement buckling might occur, the following tips can help keep motorists safe:
- Slow down, wear a seatbelt, and give the road your complete attention.
- Be prepared to move over for roadside workers and highway crews as they repair damaged pavement.
- Check the 511 Travel Information system for updates on incidents or delays.
Serious pavement issues should be reported to 911 with specific location information.
