MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WRN) — Legislative Democrats want to help people get necessary hygiene products more easily.
Senate Minority Leader Melissa Agard says removing taxes from menstrual products will help those who need them stay healthy and happy.
“They will miss school, they will miss work, they’ll compromise their dignity, they won’t be able to recreate with their families, simply because the products that they need to care for their personal health are inaccessible or unavailable or cost prohibitive,” said Agard.
Agard says there’s no reason for products like snacks or Viagra to be tax free because they are necessities, and to have pads and tampons be taxed as luxuries. She also said she would like to see those products offered in public bathrooms so that anyone who needs them can access them, regardless of price.
