A project that’s been in progress for over three years is nearly complete – enough so that the public is now welcome to enjoy the improvements.
Sheboygan’s South Pier began undergoing a major rebuilding by the Army Corps of Engineers in the spring of 2020, a project that added new sheet pile to both sides of the breakwater, put a new concrete surface on top and built a new wall around the original, deteriorating wall. The most recent previous improvements date back nearly 50 years.
Sheboygan Director of Public Works David Biebel said that the contractor has finished the project and has also cleaned up the cul-de-sac at the end of South Pier Drive, making parking available there once again.
Biebel explained that the pier is technically the property of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, but pedestrians are given access for fishing and walking. The Army Corps is planning a ribbon-cutting ceremony soon, but Biebel said that they wanted to open the pier to the public as soon as possible. Announcement of the official ceremony is pending.
