MILWAUKEE, WI (WTAQ-WRN) — A Milwaukee County sales tax increase is a step closer to being a done deal.
A special joint County Board committee on Monday took votes to increase the sales tax; a 5-0 vote by the personnel committee and 4-3 by the finance committee.
The full County Board takes a final vote on July 27 to nearly double the current county sales tax to 0.9%.
Brokered as part of a state shared revenue deal between the governor and the legislature, the new tax revenue will help prevent drastic cuts to county services.
Last week, Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson signed legislation creating a new 2% city sales tax.
Supervisors Sequanna Taylor, Steve F. Taylor and Juan Miguel Martinez voted against the hike.
