MILWAUKEE, WI (WTAQ-WRN) — The Milwaukee Common Council votes to enact a 2% city sales tax.
Tuesday’s vote was not close; there were 12 votes in favor, and only three opposed. Council members Andrea Pratt, Mark Chambers and Milele Coggs voted no.
The now-approved tax could take effect as early as next January 1. A new state law gave the Common Council authority to impose the tax.
Most of the estimated $194 million in annual revenues will go towards the city’s pension obligations.
Future revenues will help fund police and fire services.
