MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WRN) — If you are going to be using fireworks over the 4th of July, the DNR wants you to be safe.
Department of Natural Resources wildfire prevention specialist, Catherine Koele, says you should stick with ground displays.
“Even these little bottle rockets and things like that; they shoot they shoot into unknown areas or they can’t be controlled.”
Additionally, with the dry conditions outside right now, any stray spark could cause a disaster.
“If you do cause a fire as a result of using fireworks, you are liable for all suppression and costs and potentially any damages,” said Koele. “So certainly there’s some incentive to not use these fireworks.”
Koele says if you do want to shoot off your own displays, be sure to do so on non-flammable surfaces like gravel or concrete, and have a water source.
The best way to enjoy a large fireworks display is by finding a local community event where professionals can handle the large fireworks for everyone.
