MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The Juneteenth flag is flying over the Wisconsin state Capitol this weekend.
The flag was raised at noon Friday by order of Gov. Tony Evers.
The Juneteenth holiday marks June 19, 1865, when the last remaining enslaved people in the U.S., in Galveston, Texas, received word of the Emancipation Proclamation.
Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021.
The flag is ordered to fly over the Capitol’s east wing until sunset on Monday.
