MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WRN) — Republicans on the legislative joint finance committee won’t fund a pandemic-era childcare program.
The committee voted along party lines early Friday morning to reject a Democrat request to add $340 million to the budget to make the Child Care Counts program permanent.
Governor Tony Evers’s office says the program funded 22,000 childcare workers who cared for over 113,000 children across the state.
Republicans say they’re sending more money to the Department of Children and Families, and there will be $15 million in loans available to childcare providers.
