MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WRN) — As expected, the Wisconsin state Senate is not on board with the shared revenue bill passed by the Assembly this week.
Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu on Thursday said a Senate version would delete a requirement for Milwaukee city and county voters to approve sales tax increases.
“I think that would not fix the problems in Milwaukee. Because I think a referendum vote would fail,” said LeMahieu. “So I think the way to do it is through a vote by the common council and the county board.”
The Oostburg Republican indicated negotiations should continue.
“I was negotiating earlier this week with the Speaker and the Governor, and to all the sudden just stop negotiations and when everybody’s not on board, that’s unfortunate,” said LeMahieu.
A spokesperson for Governor Tony Evers said he agrees with LeMahieu, and appreciates the majority leader’s willingness to continue negotiations.
