OCONOMOWOC, WI (WTAQ-WRN) — A federal bill aimed at bike safety will be named after Oconomowoc woman.
Sarah Debbink Langenkamp died last August in Maryland when she was hit by a semi-truck while riding her bike home.
Her family was at Oconomowoc’s Common Council meeting Tuesday night advocating for the bill named after Langenkamp, which would make it easier to use federal funds to create protected bike lanes.
Her father, Dirk Debbink, spoke for the family.
“Painted white lines on a street that are considered bike lanes are actually death traps,” said Debbink. “It’s just a white line on a pavement that a truck can drive right across and crush you; as they did for Sarah.”
The council approved a resolution backing the bill.
The Debbink family now heads to Washington, D.C. to gain lawmaker support for the Sarah Debbink Langenkamp Active Transportation Act.
