MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WRN) — Hundreds of items which Governor Tony Evers included in his two year state budget plan are on the chopping block at the Capitol this week.
Senator Kelda Roys is a Democrat on the Joint Finance Committee.
“The last two budgets Republicans have basically taken all the work that was done by citizens around the state, by the governor, and just thrown it right in the garbage. First thing. And I’m hoping that that’s not what’s going to happen,” said Roys.
Policy items the committee’s majority Republicans will begin removing from the budget on Tuesday include legalized cannabis, paid family leave, and Evers’ tax plan.
Senator Joan Ballweg is a Republican on the committee.
“We are going to be responsibly putting forward a budget that will be good for all of Wisconsin, and that just as the last two budgets, the governor will acknowledge,” said Ballweg.
Republicans will build their own spending plan from base and expect to have that work completed sometime in June.
