SHEBOYGAN, WI (WTAQ-WRN) — Saturday is the 111th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. How accurate was the 1997 film?
Katelyn Zant with the Wisconsin Shipwreck Coast National Marine Sanctuary did praise director James Cameron for the research he did for the film.
“For a lot of the components of that movie they actually did really good historical research.” said Zant. “Obviously, this is one of the most talked about vessels.”
Since the film was released, some new information has come to light during the 100 year anniversary expedition in 2012. Researchers were able to create a more accurate computer model of the ship and discover it didn’t quite sink like it was depicted.
“Before Titanic breaks in half, they have the aft end of it going really high up and it was a very steep slope. You know, the scenes where all the people are sliding down; and that that happened.” said Zant. “However, they calculated it out. They’re like ‘the ship would have broken much sooner than that.’”
Once he learned this, Cameron actually went back and re edited the film to depict this new information.
