MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WRN) — Republican lawmakers are again proposing to decrease how long people can collect unemployment benefits in Wisconsin.
It’s identical to a bill vetoed by Democratic governor Tony Evers last year, and would directly link how long a person can receive unemployment benefits to the state’s unemployment rate.
Currently, unemployed workers can get regular benefits for up to 26 weeks. That would drop to as little as 14 weeks under this bill, with the state’s current unemployment rate of 2.7%.
Available weeks of benefits would rise along with the unemployment rate topping out at the current 26 weeks when the rate is at 9% or higher.
