Affordable housing has been formally identified as an impediment to progress in Sheboygan for at least the past five years, but now developers and the City of Sheboygan are pursuing the second such development within a month’s time as attention turns to action.
A direct referral is being made to the Finance and Personnel Committee to give its approval to a proposed agreement between the City and Vue 14 LLC of Fond du Lac to build a new 48-unit housing project at the southeast corner of 14th and Illinois Avenue. Another $27 million Senior Housing project was announced less than a month ago.
The latest proposal would have the City provide an upfront grant of $1.2 million in ARPA funds, and an additional $1.5 million grant from an Affordable Housing Fund established by the City in 2020 to address the shortage of safe, quality, affordable housing and revitalize central city neighborhoods. The developer would invest $11 million dollar in the project, which would break ground by September 1st this year, and would be completed by January of 2025.
The Finance and Personnel Committee will take up the matter during its Monday meeting and, if approved, send it to the full Council for consideration on April 17th.
