Wisconsin’s top officer was back in his hometown on Thursday to highlight parts of his proposed budget. The focus was on Governor Tony Evers’ proposal that includes creating a statewide Paid Family and Medical Leave Program, and makes significant investments to expand access to affordable child care.
While those proposals served as the backdrop, Evers clearly enjoyed spending time catching up with old friends and making new ones while exploring the Plymouth Public Library, a building Evers remembers well from his youth but which, after expansion, bears little resemblance to his old haunts.
The Governor got lots of input from those in Plymouth finding ways to deal with the shortage of affordable child care, an issue he’s seen first-hand during his budget tour of Wisconsin. The Governor says child care centers are “doing the best they can with minimal resources”, and that “if more resources don’t come from the State, there are gonna be a lot of places closing their doors, which is going to be bad for kids, and frankly it’s going be bad for the businesses of Wisconsin because most of those kids have parents that work, and they won’t be able to work.”
The Governor began his tour on Thursday at the Wisconsin Aluminum Foundry in Manitowoc which supports his child care initiatives, and concluded in Plymouth.
